DeSade S&M, seemingly headed for a second consecutive full season atop the poll, was stunned in the seventh week by conference foe Footmouth, 28-9. It was a major turn of the season, making way for Our Lady of the Evening to ascend to first place for the first time since 1984. The Johns, who lost the championship game two years ago, were looking for vindication of their program, traditionally strong, but especially in recent years. DeSade S&M's loss thus set up the Our Lady / Puke game on the final week of the season as a showdown of #1 and #2. Another turn: Puke avenged their loss of last season, turning the tables on the table-turners, who had slammed them in stealing the conference. Thus Puke was the only team to finish undefeated this year, adding more glory to its illustrious legacy, which includes the 1991 and 92 championships. Puke now seeks to become the first four-time champion (although Kootsville Tech can also achieve that disctinction) and in the tenth anniversary season of their first championship. Meanwhile, defending national champion Northwestsoutheastern recovered from a foreboding opening loss to march amazingly to victories the rest of the way, pulling together what some thought were too-depleted resources. The Fighting Pacifists topped it off by thwarting DeSade S&M another time for their conference title, beating them 16-14 the last weekend and sending them to the prelim of the Fish Bowl. Running back Nick Romancer was the real hero, sometimes seeming to win games single-handedly. The nation's leader in rushing and total offense, he became the first runningback to win the Demetrius Award since Curtis Interruptis in 1987, breaking a string of quarterback winners since. (Teammate Virgil Reality was one of them, two years ago.) And Romancer barely did that, tying in points with Puke QB Tab Lloyd, the closest Demetrius Award ballot in SCAB history. (* The winner is decided by position in the final poll.) Running back Tim Tasian of Our Lady set a new record for touchdowns, scoring 22.
