Vince Spleen Brings First Trophy Back to Puke
Puke quarterback Vince Spleen was named the recipient of the Demetrius Award as the most valuable player of the 2021 season in the SCAB. Spleen became the first freshman to win the award since Cretin's E. Chitton Dye in 2009, and the first recipient for Puke since QB Tab Lloyd in 1996, but it's the fifth Demetrius Award for the school. Lance Boils, the current Puke head coach, won the award as QB twice, in 1990 and 1991.
The result was something of a surprise, after Birddrops freshman QB Amos True, the rival of Spleen for the #1 recruit ranking for this year's class, and Holy Grail senior QB Isaiah Prayer were thought to be the leading contenders for both overall statistics and player of the week awards. True had the top QB composite, the combination of rushing and passing composite, and was named the All-SCAB QB. Prayer had the most player of the week honors and was a favorite for the award also for his whole career at Holy Grail, having led them to the championship game twice and the title last year.
But Spleen brought it all back around to the promise of him and Puke. Spleen is seen as the next coming of both Dye and Boils, a top QB recruit who for 300+ yards in his opening game (something not even Dye did) and put Puke back into league contention this year. With only one loss on the season, Puke reclaimed the Non Conference title, the Fish Bowl, and lead contender status. And Spleen has the promise to do what Boils did in leading Puke to contention for more than one season.
Puke's results boosted Spleen in the overall ranking, but he was also second only to Prayer in player of the week citations, along with Heroes of Polar Exploration QB Baron Fang. He finished with a total tally two points above Prayer and True, whose 15 points each actually made it a closer result. Four freshmen QBs, Spleen, True, UFO's Amal Lyke Watt and Moonshine State's Macon Dew finished in the top 5 for passing composite and led their teams back into contention this season.
Three teams had multiple candidates finish in the top 10: UFO had Watt and WR Ariel Drone; Moonshine State had RB Bennett Theophus and Dew; Whooperville A&M had RB Elwood Juno and QB Luke Ford Tuitt.
