Attractions Get Jerseys off Their BacksMaine took a big step in their hapless playoff history by ending the two-year run of the defending Eastern champion New Jerseys, also avenging a 35-13 loss in last year's conference championship game. The Attractions did it with the stout defense they are most famous for, minimizing the LAF's most explosive tandem of QB Upton O'Good and TE Bud Ugly, but adding some offensive punch of their own. WR Cole Esterhal proved the main weapon, breaking out while the Jerseys held marquis players to more modest gains: RB Xavier Breath 65 yards rushing and two TDs, WR Lou Screws 5 catches for 49 yards and a TD. Maine QB Jock Rash led the way to three first-half TDs, including an 8-yard run of his own, posting a lead which the Jerseys would never overtake. He paid the price in the fourth quarter, going down with an injury and replaced by veteran back-up Gil O'Teen. The good news is post-game examination was negative and he should return for the Eastern Conference Championship in Maine next week. |

Waves Douse StranglersNot even playing at home could protect Boston from a bad case of end zone failure. Despite a typically productive performance from Eastern MVP QB Sebastian Ophuls, 20 completions of 31 passes for 241 yards, and TE Marky DeSade's main part in that, the Stranglers could not find the end zone, settling for three Felonius A. Salt field goals. The Waves, meanwhile, eked out two TDs before halftime, mainly behind the rushing of Hugh Bastard and Moe Lester. Macon QB Boyd Bwane found WR Justin Heaven for one of those, but threw for only 169 yards in the game and was picked off twice. But it was Bwane himself who sealed the deal late in the 4th quarter on a 12-yard dash. Macon returns to the Eastern Conference Championship after winning it in 2006. |

Ghosts Return Rout of TypesIt started off differently, but finished eerily the same as their regular season meeting. Boulder led the scoring pace, 14-14 at half, through half the 3rd quarter, when they went ahead 17-14. Then Casper scored on three straight possessions and added one more TD near the end of the game to fall just a TD shy of that regular-season score. WR I.B. Long was the main problem for the Types, and the Ghosts would definitely like him to come out in the playoffs they way he did in last year's Hyperbowl. Boulder WR Everett Auerhaus picked up where he left off in the previous playoff game, with a 9-yard TD catch to start the scoring, but finished with only 4 catches for 47 yards. Casper RB Jock Kitsch rushed for 47 yards and a TD, and had 2 catches for 29 yards, and RB Orson Buggy ran for 2 TDs. |

Linemen Run Away from RednecksTucson stumbled and Wichita clicked, but was up only 15-14 until the end of the 3rd quarter, when suddenly it all snowballed for the Linemen. They scored on three straight possessions into the 4th quarter. Hard to overlook 301 yards passing from Payne Indiass and 10 catches, 134 yards and a TD from WR Ringo Fire, but undoubtedly the newsmaker was Wichita RB Milo Rider, who upstaged the Rednecks backfield of Daryl Licht and Dick Burns. Western MVP Avery Cunningham did his damage, but the difference at this stage was glaringly the QBs, as Tucson's Detlef Toupee was harassed and out of sync. Though he was a respectable 17 completions of 26 passes, it was for only 164 yards and one TD, and he carried, all forced, 8 times for -6 yards. Cunningham had boosted Tucson into the conference limelight, but now just as quickly they wane again, allowing Wichita to return for a conference championship rematch with Casper. |
