Jersies Top SaurusesIt was only Toronto's third appearance in the playoffs and in front of a home crowd, but the defending league champs, who had just slipped into the playoffs by virtue of a two-point win in a wild game over Orlando, spoiled the party. The resurgent Sauruses, who won a Hyperbowl in one of those previous two appearances, were slammed to the mat, including their rookie sensation, WR Milo Standards, who was second in the league in receptions, will almost undoubtedly be named to the All-East team and receive rookie of the year honors later today, and some think he may be the East MVP. Standards and fellow WR Elvis M. Personhater revived the career of veteran QB Merle Fiber, and vaulted Toronto back into contention over previous division powers Boston and Connecticut. But while the New Jersies started out slowly, and the Sauruses, as expected, shut down their wide receiver corps, and even managed to TE Bud Ugly, the New Jersies gathered steam behind RB Moorehead and the kicking of Franco File. New Jersies league leading QB Upton O'Good, another contender for conference MVP, threw for only 184 yards, but two touchdowns, Moorehead ran for another, and File made all three field goal attempts, including an incredible 64-yarder on a nervy call by Coach Phineas "Tenderfoot" Slipshod in the second quarter. The New Jersies now head to another showdown with division arch-rival Manhattan, whom they lost to just last week. |

Rednecks Flatten JacksThe Monterey Jacks got to spoil the perfect season of division rival Wichita, but they will not get the chance to end their season in a playoff rematch next week. The surprising Rednecks, whose first-round draft pick this year, WR Avery Cunningham, combined with last year's pick RB Dick Burns to lift them to the playoffs for the first time since 2004, were more than a threat to the four-time league champ Jacks. The game and its marquis showdowns proved far more defensive than expected. Rookie Cunningham, going up against Monterey All-West WR Ira Fuse, was particularly surprising in that regard, the former getting only 3 receptions for 33 yards, the later 7 for 31 and 1 TD. Monterey sacked Tucson QB Detlef Toupee 5 times and allowed only 56 yards passing. But the Rednecks were also able to shut down Monterey juggernaut RB Buster Hymen, while their own rushing dynamite duo of veteran Daryl Licht and Burns combined for 150 yards rushing and two TDs. They were the real force in the game. It's Tucson who will get the date with the league's best, Wichita. |
